Breast Cancer

Frequently Asked Questions

11. What is a prophylactic mastectomy?

Some women who have a high risk of breast cancer may choose to have a prophylactic mastectomy (the removal of both breasts when there are no signs of cancer). The risk of breast cancer is much lower in these women and most feel less anxious about their risk of breast cancer. However, it is very important to have cancer risk assessment and counseling about the different ways to reduce the risk of breast cancer before making this decision.
