Transcript: "Cancer Treatment and Older Adults"

As we age, we often have other health conditions, and that can affect what happens to us when we're diagnosed with cancer. So, by virtue of being older, many people have other issues they're dealing with--health problems that will have to be taken into consideration and could affect the cancer treatments they receive.

Well, as we are finding that people are living longer and healthier, we are finding that more older people can tolerate some of the aggressive therapies or the treatments that have more toxicities with them than we thought possible in the past. We are beginning to see trials that include older adults in them to help us understand what is tolerable and what is the most effective treatment for an older individual. We know that for this population, carefully tailoring the regimen is going to be very important to maximize not only recovery but the best health outcomes.
